The Cedars of Lebanon in Your Church!

Psalm 92:12-15

12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
    they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon;
13 planted in the house of the Lord,
    they will flourish in the courts of our God.
14 They will still bear fruit in old age,
    they will stay fresh and green,
15 proclaiming, “The Lord is upright;
    he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him.

In our society, sometimes the old are looked down upon as their physical ability and appearance starts to diminish.  In a world which prizes outward beauty over inward beauty, this psalm gives a beautiful image of how God's people will hold up over time and even bear fruit in their old age. "The cedar trees of Lebanon were known for their size, strength, durability, beauty, and usefulness. The blessings to come upon the righteous bring the same things." (Guzik)

As the apostle Paul taught the church in Corinth, "Though outwardly we may be wasting away, yet inwardly renewed day by day." 2 Corinthians 4:16

As one commentator said about this passage, “When their natural strength decayeth, it shall be renewed; their last days shall be their best days, wherein as they shall grow in grace, so they shall increase in comfort and blessedness."

The church should be the one place, where elders are uplifted, revered and respected. Far from being past their prime, our elders continued to bear fruit becuase they have learned the secret of abiding in the Vine, Jesus Christ.  Jesus promised in John 15, "If you abide in me you will bear much fruit."

Make sure you thank the "cedars of Lebanon" in your congregation and continue learn from their example of faithfulness and fruitfulness.
