The Lord Reigns!

Psalm 93

The Lord reigns, he is robed in majesty;
    the Lord is robed in majesty and armed with strength;
    indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
Your throne was established long ago;
    you are from all eternity.
The seas have lifted up, Lord,
    the seas have lifted up their voice;
    the seas have lifted up their pounding waves.
Mightier than the thunder of the great waters,
    mightier than the breakers of the sea—
    the Lord on high is mighty.
Your statutes, Lord, stand firm;
    holiness adorns your house
    for endless days.

Over the past several months we have seen many natural disasters.  Whether it was the flooding in Houston, or the fires in California, we see that there are times nature is unconquerable.  As the psalmist lifts up the majesty of His Lord, he uses this metaphor of the seas and its breakers to show God reigns over all.

He sits as King, higher than the spray is tossed, deeper than the fathomless depths, mightier than the strongest billow. Let Him but say, ‘Peace, be still!’ and the greatest storm that ever swept the waves with wild fury sinks into the tranquil sleep of childhood.” (Meyer)

There are other things going on in our world where we wonder, "Is God really still in charge".  Though we have all the tools of technology and other safeguards, we feel as vulnerable as ever today, even in our own United States.  Maybe we have lost a sense that God reigns over the heavens and earth and nothing happens outside of His command.  One commentator reflects on God's strength and mightiness in this way,

There never was a time in which God did not reign, in which he was not a supreme and absolute Monarch; for he is from everlasting. There never was a time in which he was not; there never can be a period in which he shall cease to exist.” (Clarke)

Whatever you are going through in your life today, remember that God reigns over it.  Though the circumstances may not change, know that He is charge and He can handle it.  When we come to the end of our road, whenever that is, we know that God is sovereign over death.  When Jesus rose from the dead, God defeated the greatest foe we will ever face.  And in heaven, we know we will reign with him. Until then let us continue to worship and adore him as Lord with our souls and our lives!
