The Ultimate GPS System!
John 16
12 “I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. 13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. 14 He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.”
Jesus is nearing the end of his journey, and he is preparing his disciples for his departure. In chapter 14, he comforts them by telling them he is going to prepare a place for them. There are many rooms in God's house and he will meet them again there someday. Today he prepares them for his departure by telling them when get goes away he is going to send them the Spirit. Earlier in the chapter he calls the Holy Spirit the "Advocate". Importantly when the Spirit comes he will guide the disciples into ALL truth. There was only so much the disciples could learn about Jesus with their natural mind. Now they would be filled with the Holy Spirit who will speak on behalf of Jesus and guide them.
There is an interesting dynamic in this passage about the work of the Trinity. Jesus says that He will make known to the Spirit all he wants the disciples to know. He will receive it from Jesus and then share with the disciples all the knowledge they need. Jesus further says that the Father had given him all things to Him, and now He was giving these things to the disciples. So we see the Holy Spirit is carrying on into the future what Jesus did while he was on earth. Jesus constantly says in the gospels that He is only doing what He sees the Father doing. Now the Spirit will continue that work. I think this is why we say it is the Spirit of Christ who lives in us.
Why is this so important? Because if the Spirit lives in us, it is Jesus' very knowledge and presence. And by application God lives in us. We are not Jesus, but He lives in and throught us by the Spirit. Most everyone today drives with a GPS. I know it helps me tremendously because I am not very good with directions. As believers in Christ, we have the ultimate GPS, God's Spirit within to guide us into all truth! Make sure you turn it on the next time you need guidance on your life's journey.
