The Key To An Untroubled Heart! - John 14
Right now many people's discomfort level is high. For two months we have tried to stay inside for fear of being infected with COVID. For the last five days we are seeing rioting, looting, and civil unrest all across the country and uncomfortably near many of us. There is economic uncertainty and many have lost jobs. So how can Jesus' words give us comfort today?
John 14 “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.
"The disciples had reason to be troubled. Jesus had just told them that one of them was a traitor, that all of them would deny Him, and that He would leave them that night. All of this would legitimately trouble the disciples, yet Jesus told them, let not your heart be troubled." (Guzik)
1. Though we might have troubled lives and a troubled world right now, we can have an untroubled heart if we put our trust in Jesus. Jesus called on the disciples to trust in Him as they trusted in God the Father. The greatest comfort for a troubled heart is Jesus himself. He is not distant when you go through troubled waters, but is right there in the boat with you.
2. Though we have troubled lives there is plenty of room in God's house. Some people think God is a stingy and only a few select people will make it to heaven. But Jesus' mission was the show God's love for the whole world. There is plenty of hate to go around right now. But God has prepared a place for all people, of all colors, and all ethnicities. We are called to be One as Jesus and the Father are One. The place Jesus has prepared will be like that, how can we create this kind of place here until Jesus chooses to return.
3. One day Jesus will come back. Though evil reigns in our world, as we have seen the past couple of days, Jesus will return in great and promised glory. Jesus never promised that things would be peaceful on this earth. He promised his followers that things would often be hostile for them as they sought to be a light for him in the world. Peter tells the early Christians that they should not be surprised when all kinds of fiery trials come their way.
I hope these verses give you some comfort today if you have a troubled heart. Jesus has prepared a place for you. Have you prepared a place for him in your heart? Trust in Him. Rely on Him. Pray to Him. Like the disciples he wants your hearts to be untroubled. As the great Saint Augustine said, "Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee!"
