"That is why the Holy Spirit says,Today when you hear his voice, don’t harden your hearts as Israel did when they rebelled, when they tested me in the wilderness. There your ancestors tested and tried my patience, even though they saw my miracles for forty years. Hebrews 3:7-9
When the Holy Spirit invites us to follow God or obey His prompting, there is no time like the present to follow His leading. The fact that the Holy Spirit invites us is reason enough to follow. Since the Holy Spirit is God, it is God inviting us.
"There is urgency to the voice of the Holy Spirit. He never prompts us to get right with God tomorrow, or to trust in yesterday – the Holy Spirit only moves us to act today." Guzik
There are many ways in which we might rebel against God or refuse to listen to his voice. Here are a few.
1. Indifference or procratination
2. Unbelief or doubt
3. Asking for more signs
4. Presuming the mercy of God
5. Paralysis by analysis
6. I don't want to make a mistake, maybe this is not from God.
In one way or another these excuses indicate a lack of faith. Later in Hebrews 11:6 the writer will say, "Without faith it is impossible to please God!"
Whenever we are sincerely following the guidance of the Holy Spirit, as long as it doesn't violate a principle of scripture, we please God. God greatest joy is when his children trust him and act upon the direction He gives through His Holy Spirit.
We see in Jesus' life complete obedience to the Holy Spirit's direction in his life. We will have times where we don't act upon the invitation of the Holy Spirit, but we can't allow it to harden our hearts like it did the Israelites. If you have ignored a prompting of the Holy Spirit, confess it and move on. Commit to be the faithful the next time the Holy Spirit calls upon you.
Where is the Holy Spirit calling you to trust His leading in your life? Today, if you hear his voice don't let your heart be hardened. Listen and obey and it will be pleasing to your Heavenly Father!
