Daily Bread 2010 – 1 Corinthians 10

12So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.

As Paul gives the Corinthians warning from Israel’s past and how they were tempted to worship other gods, he gives them a promise. This is a promise that is worth remembering. It is one of the verses I put to memory many years ago and I can assure you it works if you use it. To quote a saying from the 12 steps, “It works if you work it!”

The verse starts out by saying that you need to be careful because if you think you are immune to temptation or falling, you are in big trouble. Instead remember that we will all be tempted as it says in James, “When you are faced with many kinds of trials.” Meaning it is not if you will be tempted, but when and how. But Paul reminds us that all of these temptations are common to man. Meaning what you are going through is not new, someone else has experienced the same trial.

Sometimes when you are being tempted it feels as if you are the only person in the history of mankind to have ever gone through this temptation. Especially when you are alone this makes it really tough. That is why it is important to have a small group of friends who know you who you can call when times get tough. Our enemy usually attacks us when we are alone, because he knows that is when we are most vulnerable.

But then comes a big promise. God is faithful, and will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. And secondly, he will provide a way out. He will provide the escape hatch so you can stand up under it. This is important to remember because usually when we are walking down the road to sinning, we are not looking for out for the rope God will send us to get us out.

Of course if we are dead set on doing what we want to do, God can’t help us much. But for someone who will use this verse when they are being tempted, I guarantee you it will give you a power that you did not know you had. Of course remember the saying, “It works if you work it!” Next time you are tempted quote 1 Corinthians 10:13 and you will see God is faithful and will provide the way out so you be able to endure the trial and grow in faith and obedience to Jesus Christ.

God we thank you that you have given us a plan for when we are tested. Help us to realize that temptation is normal and happens to everyone. Give us places where we can share where we are tempted and turn to other brothers and sisters who can help us find the way out. Thank you that you are faithful and never let us get tempted beyond what we can bear! Amen.
