Daily Bread 2010 – 1 Corinthians 13

4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8Love never fails.

We all remember Tina Turner’s song in the 80’s (well at least most of us), “What’s love got to do, got to do…” Given her track record in her love life, one can see how she might be a little jaded on the idea of Love. It is interesting that Paul puts these verses right in the middle of 3 chapters that explain the nature and use of spiritual gifts. Why?

Because he realized how we love people is more important than the things/tasks we do. Especially in the realm of using our spiritual gifts Paul says we can do all kinds of cool and supernatural stuff, like speaking in tongues, but without love it is worthless. And then he makes a bold statement in v.8, “Love never fails”.

You might say, “Wait a minute I see love failing all the time, just look at the 50% divorce rate.” But Paul would say, “What kind of love are you talking about?” Often in our society love is romanticized into a feeling that never goes away. Yet anyone who is married knows that real love starts once the feelings start to dissipate.

You’ll notice in verses 4-7 there aren’t many “feeling” types of words. They are all “action” words. If you want a good definition of a love that won’t fail, read these verses, Or more importantly, love your wife or significant other in this way. When we love like this, love can never fail, because the source of this love is God. The kind of love described here is the same love Jesus showed us when he stepped out of heaven and gave everything to us as he poured out his sacrificial love on the cross!

IF you feel like you have fallen out of love, or lost that loving feeling, return to this kind of love and you will find the feelings will return. Feelings follow actions, not the other way around. When we love unselfishly we are doing what we were created to do and we are living like Jesus. This love will never fail!

Jesus thank you for showing us the way to truly love! Pour out the Spirit of this kind of love into our hearts so we can love those you have called us to live out our lives with in Your name we pray, Amen.
