A New Heaven and New Earth!
Reflection: In our church, when we recite the Apostle's Creed, in the Second Article we say:
"I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead."
Jesus came once to reveal God's great love for us on the cross, and He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Revelation 21 gives us further teaching on what that will look like. As the various judgments on the earth have taken place, today we read of a new heaven and new earth since the old one has passed away. And we see a judge on a throne who is Jesus saying, "I am making everything new!"
There are at least two new things that are revealed right away. First, no longer will God dwell apart from His people in heaven, but He will make His dwelling place with us. No longer will we worship God by faith, but He will be right there with His people receiving worship day and night. We will no longer go to church to worship, we will be the Church (which means the gathered ones) with God together forever.
Second, we will not be distant from God, but as it says He will wipe away every tear from our eyes. There will be no more mourning, death or pain, and we will live with Him forever. And in this new existence, not only will there be no sin, death or pain; but we will drink of the springs of eternal life and never be thirsty. Because we live in a world where we are constantly trying to get our bodily needs met, it is almost too hard to imagine what this would be like to never be thirsty again.
All this is promised to those who are victorious and hold on the end in faith. But there is an ominous sense to these verses as well, as we see the final judgment of those who don't believe and lives their lives worshipping other things. In the same way the resurrection to eternal life is final for those who believe, the judgment is eternal for those who don't believe. There is no mention of purgatory here, or a second chance. This is sobering.
So what can this mean for us? First and foremost, through faith in Jesus, we await a glorious inheritance to be with Jesus and the Father in heaven forever, where there is no more death, tears or pain. This gives us great hope as we go through trials in this life, and also for our loved ones who have gone on to be with The Lord forever. On the other hand for those who we are not sure of their salvation, it causes us to want to share with them the great gift of what Jesus has done for them.
It also reminds us to pray for those who don't yet believe, because only God can change a human heart through His great love for them. So while these verses provide great hope for the believer, they are also a warning for those who don't take God seriously. Its fortunate we rely on God's great grace and love for us, who began a good work in us and He will be faithful to complete it. He does that work in us through the power of the Holy Spirit, until He takes home and makes everything new!
While we await this great and glorious day, we live by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself up for us!

God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. Jerusalem’s Enemies to Be Destroyed
12 A prophecy: The word of the Lord concerning Israel.
The Lord, who stretches out the heavens, who lays the foundation of the earth, and who forms the human spirit within a person, declares: 2 “I am going to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding peoples reeling. Judah will be besieged as well as Jerusalem. 3 On that day, when all the nations of the earth are gathered against her, I will make Jerusalem an immovable rock for all the nations. All who try to move it will injure themselves. 4 On that day I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness,” declares the Lord. “I will keep a watchful eye over Judah, but I will blind all the horses of the nations. 5 Then the clans of Judah will say in their hearts, ‘The people of Jerusalem are strong, because the Lord Almighty is their God.’

Mourning for the One They Pierced
10 “And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. Cleansing From Sin

The Judgment of the Dead
11 Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them, and each person was judged according to what they had done. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the second death. 15 Anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

Gracious God, you have blessed us in many things. We are grateful, but often we forget that the blessings we receive are not fulfilled in purpose unless they become blessings to others. Give us the devotion to live a life of blessing. Amen.
