The Lord Will Appear!
Reflection: Yesterday we celebrated Christmas, as we remembered God coming to us in the Baby Jesus, born of the Virgin. It was a humble beginning for our Lord, being born in a manger, and then moving to Nazareth, where he grew up. And in our readings for today, we see how Jesus will return in great and promised glory. Zechariah 9 describes the day The Lord will appear, sound the trumpet, and destroy Israel's enemies.
And then, in Revelation 19, we see a great battle between the One called Faithful and True, the one called the Word of God, together with heavens armies against the beast, the false witness, and all the kings of the earth. The beast and the false witness, who had deluded people with receiving the mark of the best, are thrown into a lake of burning fire.
The story reminds us of the final conquest over evil that Jesus will bring in, when He comes to consummate God's kingdom here on earth as it is in heaven. So we live in between days. Jesus has come to us, God with us, Immanuel. And He will come again to defeat evil and set up a new heaven and earth. This final prophecy gives us hope as believers knowing that one day the force we see doing so much destruction will be conquered once and for all.
So what does this mean for us? Martin Luther describes Jesus' victory by what He did on the cross and then His subsequent resurrection as victory over sin, death and the power of the devil. So while we still live in the body and struggle against our own sinful nature, which rears it's ugly head sometimes. We can be assured that Jesus has conquered it once a for all and one day this will be fully realized.
For now, we rely on the means of grace God has given us. His Word, which contains His precious promises of all these things and most of all that we have been adopted as His sons and daughters. His sacraments, where we are reminded that we are a child of God in Holy Baptism and part of. God's Holy Family. And then in Communion, as we are fed at the table with the bread and wine, representing Jesus' body and blood. And finally, God has given us the Church, where we hear the Word preached, receive the sacraments administered to us by called pastor, and hear the word that we are forgiven in Jesus' name.
As we live out our faith each day using the means of grace, God is sanctifying us by the work of the Holy Spirit, who has called us and set us apart to declare His grace in the world in which we live in. Though we live in a world marred by evil, God calls us to shine brightly as sons and daughters of the King, until He returns in great and promised glory. The passage in Revelation reminds us also of the great wedding feast for the Lamb. Each Sunday as we gather to remember the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world it is a foretaste of the feast to come.
So as you begin your day today remember who you are, and whose you are and shine like the Son.

The Lord Promises to Bless Jerusalem

3 This is what the Lord says: “I will return to Zion and dwell in Jerusalem. Then Jerusalem will be called the Faithful City, and the mountain of the Lord Almighty will be called the Holy Mountain.”
4 This is what the Lord Almighty says: “Once again men and women of ripe old age will sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each of them with cane in hand because of their age. 5 The city streets will be filled with boys and girls playing there.”

Judgment on Israel’s Enemies
9 A prophecy:
The word of the Lord is against the land of Hadrak
and will come to rest on Damascus—
for the eyes of all people and all the tribes of Israel
are on the Lord—
2 and on Hamath too, which borders on it,
and on Tyre and Sidon, though they are very skillful.
3 Tyre has built herself a stronghold;
she has heaped up silver like dust,
and gold like the dirt of the streets.
4 But the Lord will take away her possessions
and destroy her power on the sea,
and she will be consumed by fire.
5 Ashkelon will see it and fear;
Gaza will writhe in agony,
and Ekron too, for her hope will wither.
Gaza will lose her king
and Ashkelon will be deserted.
6 A mongrel people will occupy Ashdod,
and I will put an end to the pride of the Philistines.
7 I will take the blood from their mouths,
the forbidden food from between their teeth.
Those who are left will belong to our God
and become a clan in Judah,
and Ekron will be like the Jebusites.
8 But I will encamp at my temple
to guard it against marauding forces.
Never again will an oppressor overrun my people,
for now I am keeping watch.
The Coming of Zion’s King
9 Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
and the warhorses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.
12 Return to your fortress, you prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.
13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, Zion,
against your sons, Greece,
and make you like a warrior’s sword.

The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. 15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written:
king of kings and lord of lords.
17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”
19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

God who births us and was born to us, our connection to you can never be broken. You know us fully in your divinity and are fully known to us, through your humanity. Praise be to God! Amen.
