The New Jerusalem!
Reflection: When the topic of what Heaven will look like comes up the usual response is that we have no idea what it will be like, but it will be a lot better than what we live in now. And while I understand that no eye has seen or ear heard what God has prepared for those who love Him, today's passage gives us some foreshadowing of what the final revelation of God will look like.
Today it is described as a new heaven and new earth. Notice it is not just an improvement on what we see now, but a complete overhaul. And this overhaul is accomplished by Jesus who now sits on the throne and says the words, "See I am making all things new. I am the Alpha and the Omega!" This is reminiscent of what we see in Church at communion time when we say, "Jesus will return in great and promised glory." And in this sense every time we receive the holy sacrament, we are preparing ourselves for the wedding feast which has no end.
What else do we see about the New Jerusalem? First of all, while in this life we pray for God's kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven, on that day there will be no separation between heaven and earth. As it says God's dwelling place will now be among His people. So while we have churches where we worship God and they back then had a temple, now what we worship will be with us and within us forever.
God Himself will be the temple and we will worship Him day and night. We also see the brilliance of the holy city, which is made of pure gold and is bespectacled with all kinds of brilliant jewels!! It is almost as if the apostle John doesn't have enough words to describe the beauty and perfection of the New Jerusalem. We see there are no more tears or crying, and there is no need for night and day for the light of Christ will shine like the noonday sun forever.
And who will inherit all of this? Those who are victorious and who are written in the Lamb's book of life. Although we usually associate this language with the end times and the book of Revelation, the language is used in many other places in the bible including: Psalm 69:28, Malachi 3:16, Luke 10:20, Exodus 32:33, Philippians 4:3 and Daniel 12:1 to mention a few.
As with any important doctrine it is important to take into account the teaching of the whole bible, which teaches us that, we are saved by grace by faith in what Jesus did for us on the cross. Whoever believes and baptized will be saved. He who began a good work in us will be faithful to complete it. Before we were even born God knew us and chose us to be His Children. And finally, the great verse in John 3:16, that God so loved the world that He gave us His only Son that whoever would believe in Him would not perish but have eternal life.
Why do I quote these verses? Because I think there is a temptation to hear about names being written in the book of life and start thinking, have I done enough to make it into this great book? It feels a little like baseball tryouts, did I do well enough to make the team, or am I on the cut list? When I was in high school I felt great angst about being part of the 144,000 that made it into the Lamb's book of life. It would have been helpful for someone to have preached to me that it was about what Jesus did for me on the cross and my trust in that not my efforts to make the team. The moment we think it is about me doing enough to make it into this list I think we have lost the essence of the Gospel, which is God doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. He did this by sending us a Savior, the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world!
I look forward to the day heaven and earth will become one and God will be among us forever. And I am forever grateful for what Jesus did for me on the cross, so that I might be able to inherit this as a Son of God, who was adopted by the Father out of His great love for all people!

and I will turn my hand against the little ones.

“two-thirds will be struck down and perish;
yet one-third will be left in it.
9 This third I will put into the fire;
I will refine them like silver

They will call on my name
and I will answer them;
I will say, ‘They are my people,’

14 A day of the Lord is coming, Jerusalem, when your possessions will be plundered and divided up within your very walls.
2 I will gather all the nations to Jerusalem to fight against it; the city will be captured, the houses ransacked, and the women raped. Half of the city will go into exile, but the rest of the people will not be taken from the city. 3 Then the Lord will go out and fight against those nations, as he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will be split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south. 5 You will flee by my mountain valley, for it will extend to Azel. You will flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord my God will come, and all the holy ones with him.
6 On that day there will be neither sunlight nor cold, frosty darkness. 7 It will be a unique day—a day known only to the Lord—with no distinction between day and night. When evening comes, there will be light.
8 On that day living water will flow out from Jerusalem, half of it east to the Dead Sea and half of it west to the Mediterranean Sea, in summer and in winter.
9 The Lord will be king over the whole earth. On that day there will be one Lord, and his name the only name.
10 The whole land, from Geba to Rimmon, south of Jerusalem, will become like the Arabah. But Jerusalem will be raised up high from the Benjamin Gate to the site of the First Gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the royal winepresses, and will remain in its place. 11 It will be inhabited; never again will it be destroyed. Jerusalem will be secure.
12 This is the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh will rot while they are still standing on their feet, their eyes will rot in their sockets, and their tongues will rot in their mouths. 13 On that day people will be stricken by the Lord with great panic. They will seize each other by the hand and attack one another. 14 Judah too will fight at Jerusalem. The wealth of all the surrounding nations will be collected—great quantities of gold and silver and clothing. 15 A similar plague will strike the horses and mules, the camels and donkeys, and all the animals in those camps.
16 Then the survivors from all the nations that have attacked Jerusalem will go up year after year to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, and to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 17 If any of the peoples of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, they will have no rain. 18 If the Egyptian people do not go up and take part, they will have no rain. The Lord will bring on them the plague he inflicts on the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles. 19 This will be the punishment of Egypt and the punishment of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the Festival of Tabernacles.
20 On that day holy to the Lord will be inscribed on the bells of the horses, and the cooking pots in the Lord’s house will be like the sacred bowls in front of the altar. 21 Every pot in Jerusalem and Judah will be holy to the Lord Almighty, and all who come to sacrifice will take some of the pots and cook in them. And on that day there will no longer be a Canaanite in the house of the Lord Almighty.

9 One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.
15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12,000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. 18 The wall was made of jasper, and the city of pure gold, as pure as glass. 19 The foundations of the city walls were decorated with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was jasper, the second sapphire, the third agate, the fourth emerald, 20 the fifth onyx, the sixth ruby, the seventh chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth turquoise, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst.[f] 21 The twelve gates were twelve pearls, each gate made of a single pearl. The great street of the city was of gold, as pure as transparent glass.
22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

All-knowing God, you understand how self-centered our days can become. Expand our horizons and bless us with vision, to serve you more faithfully through our care of all your creation. Amen.
