2 Timothy 3:14-17

"But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work."

As Paul continues to coach his protege Timothy, he reminds him of the importance of scripture.  This is the Word of God he had grown up learning about from his mother and grandmother.  I would have loved to see how his mom and grandmom taught him the holy scriptures.  It obviously had a big impact on him.  Not only did he learn it, but he became convinced of it.  This can only mean that he experienced its truth through application in real life which gave him confidence in it.

Importantly the purpose of the scripture was to bring him to a saving knowledge of Jesus. The greatest learning that God's Word can bring is to know what Jesus did on the cross for us and to trust in him for eternal life.  We can learn a lot of things in this life that are important, but the most important thing we can learn is God's great love for us poured out through His Son.  Jesus came to reveal God's love and how we can KNOW God through Him.

So the most important learning in the scripture is salvation through Christ, but the bible also is useful for many other things.  Scripture teaches us how to live our lives once we have been saved by Jesus.  The scripture corrects us when our lives are off track.  The scripture rebukes us when we violate God's laws.  The scripture corrects us when our thinking has gone awry. The scripture equips us to live a life of meaning and purpose by using our spiritual gifts.  Since the bible is "inspired by God", we can trust it completely.  Though it is written by different human authors in different locations, the Holy Spirit has kept it free from error.

If you are reading this then it is obvious you want to continue learning from the scriptures.  We continue to read the scriptures because we always need to learn from them.  The scriptures are always leading us back to Christ and renewing our minds to be aligned with God's will and purpose for us.  Give thanks for those who have taught you the bible and led you to Christ.  People in the world will continue to attack the bible and try to minimize and mock it.  For centuries the bible has stood the test of time and withstood every kind of attack imaginable.  Most importantly the bible has led people to Christ and will continue to do so until He returns.

As we like to sing, "Jesus loves me this I know for the bible tells me so!"
