Daily Bread 2011- Matthew 17
Daily Bread Together – Monday – Matthew 17
Verse of the Day: 17:1-5 “After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James and John the brother of James, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light. Just then there appeared before them Moses and Elijah, talking with Jesus. Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good for us to be here. If you wish, I will put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!”
What Does This Mean?
After six days, suggests that after working together with Jesus, He decides that the disciples need to get away and get some rest. For Jesus this often meant retreating to the mountains to be alone with His Father.
As Jesus went up to a high mountain, “he was transfigured”, meaning he literally changed appearance and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as light. The disciples had spent much time with Jesus as a human being, and now they were getting a glimpse of Jesus’ divine nature.
Peter was so enthralled with the experience that he wanted to put up three shelters, or tabernacles, and make a home for Jesus right there. But Jesus knows that his mission on earth to go to the cross for the sins of the world has not been accomplished, and allows the disciples to experience this as a sign of what is to come. Just as when Jesus was baptized, a voice from the cloud (God’s voice) came and spoke, “This is my Son, whom I love, with him I am well pleased. Listen to Him!”
What Does This Mean For Us? We often get so caught in doing ministry or working that we forget to spend time in God’s presence. That is why retreats are so important to get away (often in the mountains here in Southern California) and spend time with other members of the Church and with God.
Just as Jesus knew the disciples needed this time of renewal and affirmation of who He was before He went to the cross, He knows we need times of refreshing and re-affirmation of our faith in Him.
When is the last time you were able to get away from the hustle and bustle of daily living and spend time with Jesus either alone or with some other friends? Considering scheduling a time for your retreat or with your family or small group! There are plenty of great retreat settings within an hour or two of the Southern California area! Note: for those who attend Good Shepherd, our Men’s Retreat is March 25th to 27th up near the mountains. Sign up soon!
Jesus, thank you that you know our need to retreat from work and to rest. Just as you met the disciples in a powerful way on the mountain, meet us as we retreat and spend time with you. Amen.
