We will be reading through the New Testament again this year taking five chapters a week, Monday - Friday to get from Matthew - Revelation. I pray as a
you read a chapter each day that God will draw your attention to a verse or a few verses that will speak His truth into your life. As we respond in obedience
to God's call on our lives through His Word, we will live the abundant life in 2011! This is the life we were meant to live! Let's get started!

Verse of the Day: Matthew 1:23
"The Virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him
"Immanuel" ("which means God with us")."

What Does This Mean?

One of the unique aspects of Matthew's gospel is his connecting the birth of Jesus to the Old Testament prophecies. This would lead us to believe that
Matthew's gospel is written to a Jewish audience. Matthew begins his gospel with the lineage of Jesus traced through the line of Abraham and David, two
heroes of the Jewish faith. To Abraham was given the covenant that all nations would be blessed through his offspring. The Jewish faith centers on Genesis
12:1, where God makes a covenant with Abraham by saying, "I will make you into a great nation and bless you and make your name great and you will be a
blessing." Genesis 12:2

Then later, God fulfills the second part of the promise to Abraham by making a covenant with David that he would establish a royal kingdom through David's
offspring that would last forever. This kingdom would also become a blessing to all nations. While the Jewish nation struggled through many earthly kings, God
promised that He would one day provide worldwide blessing through an eternal king. It is into these expectations that Matthew connects the prophecy of
Isaiah 7:1,"The virgin will conceive and give birth to a royal king, who will be called "Immanuel, which means, "God with us." This fulfilled the promises to
both Abraham and David that all the nations would be blessed through their offspring as God fulfilled His covenant promise and brought His kingdom on earth
as it is in heaven through the baby Jesus.

What Does This Mean For Us?

Matthew shows us that God enters human history to become one of us and God fulfills His promises that he made to the people of God since the time of
Abraham, the father of our faith. As we journey throughout the New Testament, take time to think about your family faith history and how the Good News has
been passed on to you. Like Abraham if you have been blessed, you have been blessed so you can become a blessing to others, so that together we can continue
to carry out the covenant given to our forefathers Abraham and David and be a blessing to all nations.

Heavenly Father, as you called both Abraham and David into a covenant relationship with you, and fulfilled this promise through Your Son Jesus, being born of the Virgin Mary, may we enter into this same covenant relationship by faith in Your promises, so we can blessed to be a blessing. Amen.
