Daily Bread 2011 - Matthew 7
Daily Bread Together – Monday – Matthew 7
Verse of the Day 7:24-25
“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.
What Does This Mean? As Jesus is teaching his disciples on how to participate in God’s kingdom which He has ushered in, importantly they will have to practice what he is teaching them. He uses the analogy of a house being built on a rock to emphasize the importance of building one’s life on the foundation of His Word.
When is the foundation of a home tested? When the storms come! It as the rain falls and then accumulates and rises that the foundation is tested. If the foundation is built on the rock, it can withstand the pressure that storms bring. In the same way, as we apply Jesus’ principles to our lives we are building it on the rock will stand firm as the storms of life come in.
What Does This Mean For Us? Inevitably, as we have seen in California recently, the storms are going to come. This is true in our physical world, as well as our spiritual lives. We are tested in many ways in our daily lives. It happens sometimes through circumstances, and sometimes through trials that come our way. But these trials are unique events that can also test or reveal the quality of our faith. Will we trust in God’s promises, despite the fact that outward circumstances cause us to doubt God’s provision in our lives?
As we trust in Christ to walk with us through the trials of life and make our decisions based on the principles He has given us, we can be assured that we will withstand the trials life throws at us. Where do you place your trust when the chips are down? How have you seen God’s faithfulness to you as you have built your life on the Rock? Importantly, we know that Jesus is our Rock and despite the fact sometimes we fail in life, He will never leave or forsake us as we put our trust in Him.
Jesus, thank you for teaching us how to trust in You when the storms of life inevitably come. I pray for those who are currently going through a trial in their lives. Help them to reach out to You and continue to build their life on the Rock that will not be moved, Amen.
