Servant Attitude
Reflection: There is so much meat in today’s
passages it is hard to figure out which one to focus on. In the psalm, we see the psalmist’s heart to
rely on the Lord for everything, and his prayer is that he might be given an
undivided heart so that he would fear God’s name. He realizes the depths from which God has
delivered him, and he prays that his experience of God’s faithfulness would
resound in everything he does so that he might bring God glory. What a prayer for us to consider today.
Then we have
the famous passage from Isaiah 42, where Isaiah describes the one who will come
in this way:
42 “Here is my servant, whom
I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will bring justice to the nations.
2 He will not shout or cry out,
or raise his voice in the streets.
3 A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
4 he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
In his teaching the islands will put their hope.”

If there is
a clearer passage that describes the Messiah, Jesus, who will come I do not
know of it. And notice the focus on
justice that Jesus will bring. Not only
justice for the poor and thirsty who need the living water. But also justice
for sinners, who need to be justified in the presence of a holy God. Notice too, the gentleness of Jesus, as he
does not break the bruised reed or the smoldering wick. Jesus came to save weak sinners like you and
me.
And finally,
we have the great Christological hymn of Philippians 2:5-11. Here Paul describes the downward descent of
Jesus into greatness. Then he gives us a
bold challenge. He admonishes us to have
the same attitude of Christ, who did not consider equality with God as
something to be grasped. But what did
Jesus do? He emptied himself and became
a servant.
Jesus is our
model for greatness. We become great as
we empty ourselves of pride, lust and anger and serve others to God’s
glory. That is what we have been called
to. And then Paul provides another
promise when he says, “For it is God who
works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Even our living out our salvation through
Christ is God’s work for His glory so we can’t take the credit.
As you begin
your day consider your attitude. Is it
like Christ? Where do you need to empty
yourself so you can be more like Him?
Remember it is God working in you to do this so it is not about more
effort but more submission to the good work He began in you the day you came to
believe.
Let’s pray: God continue to do your good work in us, so
that we might testify to your great deeds and glorify you through Your Son
working in us by the power of the Holy Spirit, Amen.
Psalm 86:11-17

that I may rely on your faithfulness;

who spreads out the earth with all that springs from it,
who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it:

Do
Everything Without Grumbling
12 Therefore, my dear friends, as
you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my
absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for
it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good
purpose. 14 Do everything without grumbling or arguing, 15 so
that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a
warped and crooked generation.” Then you will shine among them like stars in
the sky 16 as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I
will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labor in vain.
17 But even if I am being poured out like a drink offering on
the sacrifice and service coming from your faith, I am glad and rejoice with
all of you. 18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
