The Dark Night of the Soul
Reflection: Often in the Psalms we see songs
of joy, thanksgiving and praise. The
psalmist celebrates God’s attributes and they were used in the worship setting
to glorify God. Today though, we see a
different tone. The psalmist is
lamenting feeling far away from God, which he describes as being in the lowest
pit. He feels overwhelmed by God’s
wrath, whether that is from his own consequences, or the results of the people
of Israel, perhaps in a time of judgment for their actions. He admits that he has not stopped calling on
God, and wonders if God will even be with him in death. He is experiencing what many have termed, “the dark night of the soul.”
Many often
paint Christianity as a “feel good” religion.
And, of course, when we come to know the Lord and start walking in His
ways, we are overwhelmed by feelings of peace, joy and purpose in our new life
in Him. But as we read through the bible,
we see that many of God’s chosen people underwent much suffering on behalf of
God’s purposes. King David is one of
them, as is Saint Paul, who writes much of his suffering on Christ’s
behalf.
Today, the
prophet reaffirms God’s love for Israel, despite the fact that God had poured
out His wrath on them for their unfaithfulness.
God even raises up King Cyrus from Persia do to His bidding to rebuild the
walls of Jerusalem. God anoints Cyrus to
save Israel from Babylonian Captivity.
Then Isaiah states these promises:
4 For the sake of Jacob my
servant,
of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
and bestow on you a title of honor,
though you do not acknowledge me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,
6 so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
people may know there is none besides me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
of Israel my chosen,
I summon you by name
and bestow on you a title of honor,
though you do not acknowledge me.
5 I am the Lord, and there is no other;
apart from me there is no God.
I will strengthen you,
though you have not acknowledged me,
6 so that from the rising of the sun
to the place of its setting
people may know there is none besides me.
I am the Lord, and there is no other.
We see God’s
faithfulness despite the face Israel did not yet know how to honor Him. God had set them apart so that many would
know His name, and He would be faithful to complete His good work in them
despite their current terrible circumstances.
Paul
reflects a little bit on this as well in Philippians. As he thinks about his life and how it has
been transformed by the call of Christ, he says, “I have not yet already obtained
it, but I press on toward the goal, forgetting what lies behind me and pressing
into what Jesus has laid up for me in heaven.” (paraphrase) Finally, he
reminds the Philippians that despite their momentary sufferings that their
citizenship is in heaven.
The bottom
line is we will all go through suffering as a believer, and part of the process
is to mold and shape us to be more like our Savior. Through our trials and tribulation we need to
keep our eyes on the cross and remember the ultimate goal for which God has
called us to glorify Him in the good and bad times. Finally, we must remember that the our
ultimate home is in heaven, where God will reveal to us things we have never
seen, and we will be able to look back and see how God worked all things
together for good (Romans 12:2) for His good and holy purpose.

can encourage you in whatever you are going through today. Remember our God who called us is
faithful! Amen.

press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me
heavenward in Christ Jesus.
Following
Paul’s Example
15 All of us, then, who are mature
should take such a view of things. And if on some point you think differently,
that too God will make clear to you. 16 Only let us live up to
what we have already attained.17 Join together in following my
example, brothers and sisters, and just as you have us as a model, keep your
eyes on those who live as we do. 18 For, as I have often told
you before and now tell you again even with tears, many live as enemies of the
cross of Christ. 19 Their destiny is destruction, their god is
their stomach, and their glory is in their shame. Their mind is set on earthly
things. 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly
await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by
the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will
transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

Appeal for Steadfastness and Unity
4 Therefore,

Lord of lords, King of kings, you are bigger than the mightiest mountain; your love is an everlasting fountain. You heard your people cry, and you sent your only Son to die, for this we put our trust in you, the world has become anew. Amen.
