The New Thing!
Reflection: The prophet Isaiah continues to prophecy
about God’s plan for His covenant people.
Though they had rejected him and were subjected to the Babylonian
super-power God had not forgotten them.
Though they had been in the wilderness and felt the thirst of the
desert, God was going to make a way in the wilderness and provide living
streams of water to quench the thirst of His people. But in order to participate in these great promises
the Israelites had to do one thing: “Forget the former things and not dwell on
the past!” For God was doing a “new
thing”!
Isaiah 43:18 “Forget the
former things;
do not dwell on the past.
19 See, I am doing a new thing!
Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?
I am making a way in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland.
20 The wild animals honor me,
the jackals and the owls,
because I provide water in the wilderness
and streams in the wasteland,
to give drink to my people, my chosen,
21 the people I formed for myself
that they may proclaim my praise
do not dwell on the past.

As believers we often go through
times of feeling like we are in the desert.
Sometimes we return to old ways that are not of God. Sometimes we feel the consequences of
forgetting our first love. But as we
rely on the promise that God is doing a “new thing” and forget the things of
our past we can be renewed! God has
chosen us to be part of His plan for redemption. As the passage says,
“I, even I,
am the Lord,
and apart from me there is no savior.
12 I have revealed and saved and proclaimed—
I, and not some foreign god among you.”

Notice all the “I” language. God has revealed, God has saved and
proclaimed. The emphasis is what God has
done for us, not what we have done for him!
How can you forget the former things of your past and focus on what God
has done for you! Drink of the living
waters that Jesus has come to bring you and don’t live in the past. Live into the future God has for you as His
covenant Son or Daughter. It is who we
are in Christ that defines us and what we will be. It is God who works in us to fulfill His good
purpose. This is the new thing He did
back then and is doing today! Amen.

and the Most High himself will establish her.”

Let the people of Sela sing for joy;
let them shout from the mountaintops.
12 Let them give glory to the Lord
and proclaim his praise in the islands.
13 The Lord will march out like a champion,
like a warrior he will stir up his zeal;
with a shout he will raise the battle cry
and will triumph over his enemies.

along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;
I will turn the darkness into light before them
and make the rough places smooth.
These are the things I will do;
I will not forsake them.
17 But those who trust in idols,
who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’
will be turned back in utter shame.

I cry out, I gasp and pant.

Israel Blind and Deaf
18 “Hear, you deaf;
look, you blind, and see!
19 Who is blind but my servant,
and deaf like the messenger I send?
Who is blind like the one in covenant with me,
blind like the servant of the Lord?
20 You have seen many things, but you pay no attention;
your ears are open, but you do not listen.”
21 It pleased the Lord
for the sake of his righteousness
to make his law great and glorious.
22 But this is a people plundered and looted,
all of them trapped in pits
or hidden away in prisons.
They have become plunder,
with no one to rescue them;
they have been made loot,
with no one to say, “Send them back.”
look, you blind, and see!

Israel’s Only Savior
43 But now, this is what the
Lord says—

I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers,
they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire,
you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.
3 For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior;
I give Egypt for your ransom,
Cush and Seba in your stead.
4 Since you are precious and honored in my sight,
and because I love you,
I will give people in exchange for you,
nations in exchange for your life.
5 Do not be afraid, for I am with you;
I will bring your children from the east
and gather you from the west.
6 I will say to the north, ‘Give them up!’
and to the south, ‘Do not hold them back.’
Bring my sons from afar
and my daughters from the ends of the earth—
7 everyone who is called by my name,
whom I created for my glory,

God’s Mercy and Israel’s
Unfaithfulness

Israel’s Creator, your King.”

Philippians 2:19-30
Timothy and Epaphroditus
19 I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to
you soon, that I also may be cheered when I receive news about you. 20 I
have no one else like him, who will show genuine concern for your welfare. 21 For
everyone looks out for their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ. 22 But
you know that Timothy has proved himself, because as a son with his father he
has served with me in the work of the gospel. 23 I hope,
therefore, to send him as soon as I see how things go with me. 24 And
I am confident in the Lord that I myself will come soon. 25 But
I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker
and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of
my needs. 26 For he longs for all of you and is distressed
because you heard he was ill. 27 Indeed he was ill, and almost
died. But God had mercy on him, and not on him only but also on me, to spare me
sorrow upon sorrow. 28 Therefore I am all the more eager to
send him, so that when you see him again you may be glad and I may have less
anxiety. 29 So then, welcome him in the Lord with great joy,
and honor people like him, 30 because he almost died for the
work of Christ. He risked his life to make up for the help you yourselves could
not give me.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This is the Lord’s doing; it is marvelous in our eyes. Psalm 118:22-23
Come to Christ, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight. 1 Peter 2:4
Heavenly Father, we believe Jesus Christ is your son, the rock on which the foundation of Christianity was built. You chose him to be our savior and he is perfect in every way. We follow him and you. Amen.
