The Battle at Hand!
Reflection: In today’s passages we see the power of the Lord! The psalmist tells us that He rules over the surging
sea and the heavens and the earth are all created by His hand. In Isaiah, the prophet says by a mere rebuke
He dries up the sea, and He clothes the heaven with darkness. Then, as we get to the verses in Colossians,
as we start this new epistle by Saint Paul, we this power given to the Church
at Colossae.
Paul says these words to
encourage this church to be faithful to its calling:
“9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we
have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the
knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit
gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and
please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the
knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power
according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and
patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has
qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of
light. 13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness
and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom
we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”
In order to live a life
worthy of the Lord and please him in every way, Paul knows they will need to be
strengthened by God’s power according to His glorious might. He knows it will be a battle, so he prays for
patience and endurance for these early saints. But in doing this He gives them
a fact that God has rescued them from the dominion of darkness and brought them
into the kingdom of the Son. They have a
new power that is straight from the Lord himself in whom they have been
redeemed and forgiven.
Paul knows that the only
way they are going to live a life worthy of their calling is by realizing their
power comes from the Kingdom of the Son, not of the world. And through the power of the Holy Spirit they
have that power so they can be patient and endure the trials of the world so as
to secure their eternal inheritance.
What does this mean for
us? We too battle as Paul says, “Not
against flesh and blood, but against principalities of this present darkness.” But God has equipped us for the battle with
weapons of the Spirit from God’s kingdom reality. But often we try to fight these battles in
our own power and strength and that is why we get beat up sometimes. Where are your battles? Possibly in a temptation you are trying to
overcome but it seems like you keep losing?
Maybe it is another difficult personality that brings out the worst in
you?
As you live out your
calling in Christ as a son or daughter, remember the great power Jesus has
given you through His Spirit to live out your new life in Christ! Use the weapons God has given you prayer,
relying on God’s Word, the sword of the Spirit, and the fellowship of other
saints in light! As we rely on Christ we
can do all things to His glory, Amen!!!
Psalm 89:9-18
9 You rule over the surging sea;

10 You crushed Rahab like one of the slain;
with your strong arm you scattered your enemies.
11 The heavens are yours, and yours also the earth;
you founded the world and all that is in it.
12 You created the north and the south;
Tabor and Hermon sing for joy at your name.
13 Your arm is endowed with power;
your hand is strong, your right hand exalted.

and by your favor you exalt our horn.
18 Indeed, our shield belongs to the Lord,
our king to the Holy One of Israel.

and their queens your nursing mothers.
They will bow down before you with their faces to the ground;
they will lick the dust at your feet.
Then you will know that I am the Lord;
those who hope in me will not be disappointed.”
I will lift up my banner to the peoples;

and carry your daughters on their hips.

that I, the Lord, am your Savior,
your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Israel’s Sin and the
Servant’s Obedience
50 This is what the Lord
says:
“Where is your mother’s
certificate of divorce
with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
did I sell you?
Because of your sins you were sold;
because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.
2 When I came, why was there no one?
When I called, why was there no one to answer?
Was my arm too short to deliver you?
Do I lack the strength to rescue you?
By a mere rebuke I dry up the sea,
I turn rivers into a desert;
their fish rot for lack of water
and die of thirst.
3 I clothe the heavens with darkness
and make sackcloth its covering.”
with which I sent her away?
Or to which of my creditors
did I sell you?
Because of your sins you were sold;
because of your transgressions your mother was sent away.

When I called, why was there no one to answer?

tongue,
to know the word that sustains the weary.
He wakens me morning by morning,
wakens my ear to listen like one being instructed.
5 The Sovereign Lord has opened my ears;
I have not been rebellious,
I have not turned away.
6 I offered my back to those who beat me,
my cheeks to those who pulled out my beard;
I did not hide my face
from mocking and spitting.
7 Because the Sovereign Lord helps me,
I will not be disgraced.
Therefore have I set my face like flint,
and I know I will not be put to shame.
8 He who vindicates me is near.
Who then will bring charges against me?
Let us face each other!
Who is my accuser?
Let him confront me!

Everlasting Salvation
for Zion
51 “Listen to me, you
who pursue righteousness
and who seek the Lord:
Look to the rock from which you were cut
and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
2 look to Abraham, your father,
and to Sarah, who gave you birth.
When I called him he was only one man,
and I blessed him and made him many.
3 The Lord will surely comfort Zion
and will look with compassion on all her ruins;
he will make her deserts like Eden,
her wastelands like the garden of the Lord.
Joy and gladness will be found in her,
thanksgiving and the sound of singing.

and its inhabitants die like flies.
But my salvation will last forever,
my righteousness will never fail.

Colossians 1:1-14

2 To God’s holy people in Colossae, the faithful

Grace and peace to you
from God our Father.
Thanksgiving and Prayer
3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus
Christ, when we pray for you, 4 because we have heard of your
faith in Christ Jesus and of the love you have for all God’s people— 5 the
faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven and about
which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel 6 that
has come to you. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing
throughout the whole world—just as it has been doing among you since the day
you heard it and truly understood God’s grace. 7 You learned it
from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant, who is a faithful minister of Christ on
our behalf, 8 and who also told us of your love in the Spirit. 9 For

Heavenly Father, help us to plant the seed of kindness in our homes, communities, and in our every action so your love may spread throughout the world. Please help us to take the time to do something nice for someone else today. Amen.
