Daily Bread 2010 Since this is the last day of the year, this will end our walk through the New Testament together. For those of you who wish to continue we will start again on Monday, January 3rd in the book of Matthew. We got to Revelation 10 this year (10 chapters short of the whole New Testament), I hope to make it through the entire New Testament next year with God’s help. I hope you have found it profitable to be in God’s Word on a consistent basis. Though I have been through the bible many times each day, each year, each moment it speaks to me through the power of the Holy Spirit in new ways with applications to the current situations of my life personally and professionally. Daily Bread 2010 – Revelation 9 Revelation 9 1 The fifth angel sounded his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. 2 When he opened the Abyss, smoke rose from it like the smoke from a gigantic furnace. The sun and sky were darkened by the smoke from the Abyss. 3 And out of the smoke locusts came down on the earth and were given power like that of scorpions of the earth. 4 They were told not to harm the grass of the earth or any plant or tree, but only those people who did not have the seal of God on their foreheads. 5 They were not allowed to kill them but only to torture them for five months. And the agony they suffered was like that of the sting of a scorpion when it strikes. 6 During those days people will seek death but will not find it; they will long to die, but death will elude them. Daily Bread 2010 - Revelation 7 13 Then one of the elders asked me, “These in white robes—who are they, and where did they come from?” 14 I answered, “Sir, you know.” And he said, “These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore, “They are before the throne of God and serve him day and night in his temple; and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence. 16 ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them,’ nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the center of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water.’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.’” Revelation 7 probably gives us the most vivid imagery of what heaven will be like. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!” 2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! The Scroll and the Lamb 1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.” We often hear it said, “Who’s writing the script for your life?” Meaning sometimes we feel there is some grand overarching story with a script which describes what our life is supposed to look like. Daily Bread 2010 – 2 John 1 2 John 1 1 The elder, To the lady chosen by God and to her children, whom I love in the truth—and not I only, but also all who know the truth— 2 because of the truth, which lives in us and will be with us forever: 3 Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father’s Son, will be with us in truth and love. 4 It has given me great joy to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as the Father commanded us. 5 And now, dear lady, I am not writing you a new command but one we have had from the beginning. I ask that we love one another. 6 And this is love: that we walk in obedience to his commands. As you have heard from the beginning, his command is that you walk in love. Unlike the Gospel of John, the letter of 1 John is ascribed to an “author”, “the elder”, and written to an audience called, “the lady”. An “elder” is the same term for our word “presbyter” or “overseer”. Sometimes in traditional churches this is

Daily Bread 2010 - 1 John 5 Faith in the Incarnate Son of God 1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God. As John finishes his letter, he reminds us that whoever believes Jesus is the Christ (Messiah), not only just a man, is born of God. By believing that Jesus is the Son of God, we become part of God’s holy family. We love the Father by accepting the Son, and also our brothers and sisters in God’s holy family. This is the Church. God is love. Daily Bread 2010 – 1 John 3 7 Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8 The one who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. 9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. 10 This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not God’s child, nor is anyone who does not love their brother and sister. As we continue through the book of 1 John, we see many challenging words. One of the consistent themes in chapter 3 is, “whoever is born of God cannot go on sinning”. How do we interpret this, since our experience is that we do continue to sin and continue to need to repent and ask God for forgiveness on a daily basis

Daily Bread 2010 – 1 John 2 Love and Hatred for Fellow Believers 3 We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 4 Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. 7 Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. 8 Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining. When we first read verses 3-6 we might think it seems a little harsh. It says, “Whoever says I know him but does not do what he commands is a liar and the truth is not in this person.” This seems like a throwback to the Old Testament laws, which God’s people could never measure up to. Daily Bread 2010 – 1 John 1 Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. As we move from 1 and 2 Peter to 1 John, we see that the language is very much like that of the Gospel of John. There is no reason to think this is not the apostle John, who is writing down his eyewitness account of seeing, hearing and touching the Risen Lord J

Daily Bread 2010 – 2 Peter 3 8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. 9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells. 2 Peter 2 False Teachers and Their Destruction 1 But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereign Lord who bought them—bringing swift destruction on themselves. 2 Many will follow their depraved conduct and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. 3 In their greed these teachers will exploit you with fabricated stories. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping. One of the main issues 2 Peter is written about is the false teachers that were beginning to present themselves in the church. Often these false teachers went one of two ways in their false ideas. One was a strict legalism that taught that one had to do certain things to become a believer (like Gentile men needing to be circumcised). Or the other way was a false teaching on the matter of God’s grace, which said, “You are forgiven so you can

1 Peter 5 To the Elders and the Flock 1 To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away. 5 In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, “God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.” As the writer of 1 Peter closes out this letter to the early Christians exiled throughout Europe and Asia (Asia Minor), he urges the leaders of the church, called “elders”, to exercise their spiritual leadership diligently.
