Daily Bread 2010 - Revelation 5

The Scroll and the Lamb
1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne a scroll with writing on both sides and sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming in a loud voice, “Who is worthy to break the seals and open the scroll?” 3 But no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth could open the scroll or even look inside it. 4 I wept and wept because no one was found who was worthy to open the scroll or look inside. 5 Then one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has triumphed. He is able to open the scroll and its seven seals.”

We often hear it said, “Who’s writing the script for your life?” Meaning sometimes we feel there is some grand overarching story with a script which describes what our life is supposed to look like. Sometimes people allow a negative script to be written and interpret every event in their lives as it is going to happen anyways so it really doesn’t matter.

In Revelation 5, we hear of another script, the script regarding the end of the world, and the eternal shape of what is to come. Apparently this script is written on a scroll, like all of the ancient writings, as our modern day version of paper did not exist. Usually these scrolls were sealed to protect them both physically, and sometimes because of the information they held.

In Revelation 5, we are told about the one who is worthy who will open the scroll which will contain information about the unfolding of the events surrounding the end of the world. For a long time no one could look at the contents of the scroll, but the Lion of Judah (Jesus as descended from the tribe of Judah) was found worthy. Jesus’ triumph on the cross and subsequent resurrection and ascension to the right hand of the Father made Him worthy.

What does this mean? Jesus through his death and resurrection has accomplished the victory which brought into play the final era of God’s salvation. His victory assured victory over sin, death and the power of the devil. For those who believe in Christ, He has given us the keys to the kingdom and one day we like the angels and elders will bow down to worship the Lamb who was slain! We will also cry “Worthy is the lamb, worthy to receive power, wisdom, wealth, glory and honor.”

Dear Jesus, we are not worthy to come into your presence but by your sacrifice you count as worthy because of the victory you have assured over the power of death. Count us as one of those who will one day see you face to face and fall down and say Worthy is the Lamb of God, to receive honor, blessing and glory, Amen
