Daily Bread 2010 – Revelation 3

To the Church in Philadelphia
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:
These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open. 8 I know your deeds. See, I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut. I know that you have little strength, yet you have kept my word and have not denied my name. 9 I will make those who are of the synagogue of Satan, who claim to be Jews though they are not, but are liars—I will make them come and fall down at your feet and acknowledge that I have loved you. 10 Since you have kept my command to endure patiently, I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come on the whole world to test the inhabitants of the earth.

Out of the seven churches, the church at Philadelphia gets the most favorable review. Because the church has been faithful John says an incredible thing to them. He says, “I have placed before you an open door that no one can shut!” What does this mean?

I think it means that God is going to go before them and whatever they do and open the door for His Spirit to transform the lives of the people they touch. I think it means that God is going to infuse their meetings with His presence and power like never before so that they are going to be “on fire” for God’s purpose in their area. I think it also means that God is going to open some doors for evangelism and the lost to be found, as Philadelphia was located on a very strategic and busy trade route.

What would it be like for God to provide an open door for ministry? It sure would be exciting don’t you think.
As Paul did His missionary travels the Holy Spirit warned him not to go to certain places because there were closed doors and also danger to him personally. But there were other open doors that as Paul faithfully went through led to many being converted for the sake of Christ.

One of the ways God opens the door is when we pray for him to do so. Paul tells us our battles are not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers of this present darkness. As we open the eyes of our hearts to see what God is doing and wanting, we can pray for God to continue to open up doors that we can go through with His presence to take enemy territory and advance the kingdom.

Will you pray with me for open doors for our churches and for us as we emulate the Church of Philadelphia to keep God’s commands faithfully?

Jesus, open a door for us to fulfill the Great Commission to make disciples. Forgive us of our sins and help us by your grace to keep Your Word and persevere through hardship so we can walk through open doors for the sake of Your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven. Amen.
