Daily Bread 2010 - Revelation 10
Daily Bread 2010
Since this is the last day of the year, this will end our walk through the New Testament together. For those of you who wish to continue we will start again on Monday, January 3rd in the book of Matthew. We got to Revelation 10 this year (10 chapters short of the whole New Testament), I hope to make it through the entire New Testament next year with God’s help.
I hope you have found it profitable to be in God’s Word on a consistent basis. Though I have been through the bible many times each day, each year, each moment it speaks to me through the power of the Holy Spirit in new ways with applications to the current situations of my life personally and professionally. Let me know if you would like to continue on the email distribution list, or would like to be taken off. As always, of course no pressure I realize there are many ways to be fed with God’s Word this is just one of them.
May God bless and keep you on this New Year’s Eve and into 2011 as we seek to be disciples of Jesus Christ and be led by the Word incarnate in all we say and do so the world may know God’s great unconditional love for them!~
In His grace and love,
Pastor Mike Anderson
Revelation 10
The Angel and the Little Scroll
1 Then I saw another mighty angel coming down from heaven. He was robed in a cloud, with a rainbow above his head; his face was like the sun, and his legs were like fiery pillars. 2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand. He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”
5 Then the angel I had seen standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven. 6 And he swore by him who lives for ever and ever, who created the heavens and all that is in them, the earth and all that is in it, and the sea and all that is in it, and said, “There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”
As we reach the 10th chapter of the book of Revelation, we are ready for the 3rd woe through the 7th angel sounding his trumpet. This is the last and final tribulation that will bring about the end of the world. Within this 7th tribulation, or Seventh sign, are seven more thunders. As we have said before, 7 is a powerful and significant number in the bible. It is the number for completeness or wholeness from God’s perspective.
It is significant that John is asked to eat the scroll which tastes sweet going down but turns sour in his stomach. This is the double edged nature of prophecy, which cuts to our very core separating soul/spirit and joints/marrow. The nature of God’s Word (prophecy) cuts to the core of who we are and judges the thoughts and attitudes of our hearts. That is why Paul calls “prophecy” the greatest of the gifts in 1 Corinthians 14. It is not greater in terms of the person who bears the gift, but in terms of the God’s Word being the final arbiter on matters of life and faith.
On a side note, many of our churches left our denomination (the ELCA) over the issue of biblical authority. Many wanted to make the issue over “homosexuality”, but the bottom line for me at least was the role of the bible, and biblical authority, in the decisions we make as a Church.
May we continue like John to take in (digest) God’s Word in the person of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit so we might be a light in a world full of darkness!
Dear Jesus thank you for coming to this earth to show us the full extent of the Father’s love. Thank you for Your Word which you incarnated for us by dwelling among us and being full of grace and truth. Send Your Spirit so we might more effectively share this life giving Word with all who you would lead us to. In your name and power, Amen.
