Daily Bread 2010 – 1 John 1

Light and Darkness, Sin and Forgiveness
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.

As we move from 1 and 2 Peter to 1 John, we see that the language is very much like that of the Gospel of John. There is no reason to think this is not the apostle John, who is writing down his eyewitness account of seeing, hearing and touching the Risen Lord Jesus. John uses the familiar “Word” was with us, which is the same Word that became flesh in John 1.

A big emphasis in chapter 1 is the fellowship we have God and His Son, as we walk in the light. Light and darkness are another familiar theme in John’s writings. As we have received the light of the Son, we are to continue to walk in it, and when we have sinned we are to confess it immediately. When we claim we don’t have sin, we allow the darkness to crowd out the truth. I love the definition of confession as “speaking the truth”. To confess is to say the same thing as God would say.

When we confess and come clean, we are able to be cleansed from our sin and walk in the truth and light again. In our worship services, we try to have a time each Sunday for the corporate confession, but we are also told that we can individually confess our sin to God any time night or day. Confession leads to healing and a restored fellowship with God the Father and the Son in the power of the Holy Spirit who convicts us when we are walking in the dark.

Is there any thing you need to confess today? Share your confession with God, and allow the light of Christ to penetrate your heart and mind and experience the deep fellowship God wants to always have with us.

Dear Jesus, I confess I have sinned against you in thought, word and deed. By what I have done and by what I have left undone. I have not loved you with my whole heart or my neighbor as myself. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ have mercy on my me and forgive, renew and restore me back into fellowship with You. Amen.
