Daily Bread 2010 - Jude

Daily Bread 2010 – Jude
3 Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt compelled to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to God’s holy people. 4 For certain individuals whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into a license for immorality and deny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord.
5 Though you already know all this, I want to remind you that the Lord at one time delivered his people out of Egypt, but later destroyed those who did not believe. 6 And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling—these he has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. 7 In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.

In a similar way Jude describes some of the false teaching that crept into the Church in the 1st Century. In this case again there were those who were teaching, “You’re forgiven, so you can just do whatever you want”. This includes sexual immorality, for again since the body was going to die and was doomed anyways one might as well enjoy as much pleasure as possible in this life.

This was part of the Gnostic teaching that denied Jesus came in a body, since there was a strict dualism that taught that the Spirit was good and body (and all material things) was bad. They reasoned since is God is good he could have never inhabited a human body. We see the stern consequences of those who distort the goodness and grace of God and lead others into false teachings, especially regarding the Son of God. That is why the bible consistently teaches those who teach are held to a higher authority.

One of the reasons it is good to read through God’s Word on a continual basis, is the more immersed you are in the Truth, the more apt you are to recognize a lie. By knowing God’s Word we can contend for the faith that was entrusted to God’s holy people. Though salvation is God’s Word, we are given responsibility and accountability for guarding and teaching the faith.

Dear Jesus, we thank you for teaching us the Truth that sets us free and shows us that everything about us body, mind and soul are made and redeemed by you. Thank you for coming in a body to show us that you can relate to all of our earthly struggles. Help us to guard the faith you have entrusted to us and hold fast to the teaching and rule of faith that has been faithfully transmitted to our generation. Amen.
