How to Use Power and Authority Wisely!

2 Corinthians 13:8-10 For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. We are glad whenever we are weak but you are strong; and our prayer is that you may be fully restored. 10 This is why I write these things when I am absent, that when I come I may not have to be harsh in my use of authority—the authority the Lord gave me for building you up, not for tearing you down.

Paul had visited the Corinthians two times, and was going there for his third visit.  Paul's hope was that the Corinthians would resolve their own problems and discipline including those who had engaged in immoral behavior.  Though he wanted them to resolve the matter themselves, he was certainly willing to handle the issue with them himself.  Though some in the church had challenged his authority and criticized his approach, he assured them that he would not hesitate to use the full authority God had given him if necessary.

His authority was God-given as the Lord's apostle.  And his authority was given by Christ himself in the Great Commission when Jesus said, "All authority has been given to me therefore, go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit and I am with you until the end of the age." The authority God has given Christian leaders is used to build up the church.  At times that authority needs to be used to discipline those who are threatening the unity of the church.  One back biting person can cause quite a bit of division in the church.   Individuals or small cliques can start questioning the pastor or even seek his removal.  This can create gossip and division and completely distracts a church from its mission in the world. Pastor's need accountability and that is the role of council or boards elected by the church.

As a follower of Christ you have been given authority.  Your authority is Christ in you, the hope of glory.  God has given you power through the Holy Spirit.  This is the power that helps you live a new life. The power to pray.  The power to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ.  As we are given power, we are to use it wisely to build up the church not tear down.  Like all power we are accountable to a higher, the Lord God Almighty for it use.
